About this Site
charleshartman.org is the weblog and personal website of Charles A. Hartman. This site exists because I wanted a little soapbox (and an attractive one at that) from which to make various and sundry pronouncements. I make every effort to write well, or at least decently, and hopefully I succeed at least some of the time. If you would like to contact me, please use the online form.
Design and Coding
Templates and styles used on this Site are by the marvelously talented and genial Mr. Andy Arikawa, whose own weblog, The Daily Flight, features numerous articles of interest to graphic designers as well as civilians such as myself. He may be contacted with comments and bug reports.
Web Standards
I believe strongly in web standards and so does Mr. Arikawa, thus this site is coded using XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are utilized to provide consistency of vision across modern browsers while still enabling older browsers to access the site without styling. The validity of the XHTML and CSS, as well as my RSS 2.0 feed may be checked by clicking the appropriate links:
Typography
I love type. This site makes use of Georgia for its body copy and headlines. Georgia was created by Matthew Carter for Microsoft, and is designed to be legible even at small sizes on screen. Various other Site elements, most notably the sidebar, use variations of the Lucida family; OS X users will see Lucida Grande, Windows users should see Lucida Sans Unicode, and others without these fonts installed will default to Lucida or Verdana.
Tools
Apple builds amazing tools, I use as many of them as I can afford. Mac OS X is the present and future. Text is frequently written in Hydra or BBEdit. Adobe Photoshop is used for so many things I can't list them all. My favorite FTP application is Transmit, but at times I have been known to interact with my server using the command line interface via the Terminal. NetNewsWire and Shrook are both excellent RSS aggregators. Lastly, this site is powered by the most amazing Movable Type.
